**WHAT IS LYE?
Lye is a general term which today essentially stands for two alkaline chemical compounds: Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) & Potassium Hydroxide (KOH). Traditionally lye was created from soaking wood ash in water for a period of time making what is referred to as ‘potash’. Today they're made from salts. The salts used are extremely alkaline in nature (high PH levels) which is why before being processed into soap fats it can burn the skin very easily. When the fat based ingredients process the lye - referred to as “Saponification” - the lye is neutralized and then becomes soap - activating the materials needed and turning it into the cleaning agent we expect. All natural soap must contain lye. My soap is left to cold process for about 8 weeks per ‘loaf’. The standard time for cold processing soap can be anywhere from 4-8 weeks.
